Forest School

Our Forest School approach

Here at Earthwise, we believe that the natural world is the greatest inspiration for learning a huge diversity of subjects. Forest School is not intended as a means to deliver curricula outdoors - that is ‘outdoor learning’. That is not to say children don’t learn at Forest School - quite the opposite! The learning happens through a child’s natural curiosity, which, observed by the Forest School leader is explored and supported. As such, Forest School is a long-term learner-centred process with a cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review linking each session.

Forest School has been recognised internationally as invaluable tool for developing important life-skills such as enhanced self-esteem, effective risk management, cooperation, independence and trust. Many children who struggle to learn in a conventional classroom environment often thrive at Forest School.

“No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced”
— Sir David Attenborough

Children are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature at a time when we will be depending on this younger generation as the future stewards of our planet to see us through the climate crisis. Time spent playing, crafting, exploring and learning outdoors at Forest School all helps to foster a greater understanding, respect and love for the ecosystem that we are a part of.

We have been so fortunate to have been able to work with and learn from Claire! She has a sincere ethos towards child development, learning and exploring that is in line with discovery-led and play-based learning and teaches children to respect their environment, delight in the awe and wonder of nature, and grow in confidence! We have watched so many of our children thrive during her Forest School sessions, where she has no end of ideas that are creative, sustainable and engaging! We have all learned so much from her as she really knows her facts and the children remember lots of these really interesting things! I mean how many people know the difference between a caterpillar nibble and a slug nibble?
